With homes getting smaller all the time, homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to save space and add decorative functionality.  Solutions range from built-in storage and entertainment walls to pocket door systems.

Meanwhile, builders often seem to use a “cookie cutter” approach, with many houses in a neighborhood almost identical in appearance. So homeowners are looking for ways to add one-of-a-kind decorative pieces to personalize their home.  And practical, attractive handmade gifts are always well received.

Here’s a project that provides decorative functionality in a unique piece that’s sure to be a conversation starter. With the wide selection of door furniture available, you can make this unique and sturdy conversation piece to fit any décor.  You can match all the knobs, or use different ones for different family members’ coats.  A quick and easy project for you, it also makes a unique gift for friend or family.

You’ll need a piece of wood about 6” wide and 18” long.  (You can make it smaller or larger if you wish.) And four (or more) decorative door knobs.  The only tool you’ll need is a screwdriver and a handful of sturdy screws.

If you’re going to paint or stain the wood, do it now so you don’t have to work around the doorknobs.

Measure and lightly mark the spacing to mount the four knobs to the wood.  Now you simply attach the doorknobs to the wood with sturdy screws.

Now you have a space-saving place to hang coats, hats, or purses.
